Scattering theory using smeared non-Hermitian potentials

چکیده

Complex, non-Hermitian potentials V (x) 6= V (x) can often generate the standard, normalizable bound states ψ(x). Unfortunately, the idea [based on the use of a nonlocal ad hoc metric Θ(x, x) 6= δ(x − x) in Hilbert space] cannot directly be transferred to scattering [cf. H. F. Jones, Phys. Rev. D 78, 065032 (2008)]. We complement and modify this result by showing that a return to the causal and unitary quantum scattering scenario is still possible, provided only that one employs nonHermitian potentials which are non-local or, equivalently, momentum-dependent, V = V (x, p) 6= V . Via an illustrative example we demonstrate that in these cases the domain where the metric gets anomalous, Θ(x, x) − δ(x − x) 6= 0 [i.e., where the observability of the coordinate x is violated] may stay confined to a vicinity of interval(s) where V (x, p) 6= 0. Conceptual Problems in Scattering from Localized non-Hermitian Potentials

We highlight the conceptual problems that arise when one applies the quasi-Hermitian framework to analyze scattering from localized non-Hermitian potentials, in particular complex square-wells or deltafunctions. When treated in the framework of conventional quantum mechanics, these potentials are generally considered as effective theories, in which probability is not conserved because of proces...

Non-Hermitian quantum mechanics: the case of bound state scattering theory

Excited bound states are often understood within scattering based theories as resulting from the collision of a particle on a target via a short-range potential. We show that the resulting formalism is non-Hermitian and describe the Hilbert spaces and metric operator relevant to a correct formulation of such theories. The structure and tools employed are the same that have been introduced in cu...

Scattering in PT -Symmetric Quantum Mechanics

A general formalism is worked out for the description of one-dimensional scattering in non-hermitian quantum mechanics and constraints on transmission and reflection coefficients are derived in the cases of P, T or PT invariance of the Hamiltonian. Applications to some solvable PT -symmetric potentials are shown in detail. Our main original results concern the association of reflectionless pote...

Iterative Methods for Transmission Eigenvalues

Transmission eigenvalues have important applications in inverse scattering theory. They can be used to obtain useful information of the physical properties, such as the index of refraction, of the scattering target. Despite considerable effort devoted to the existence and estimation for the transmission eigenvalues, the numerical treatment is limited. Since the problem is non-standard, classica...
